This is a great initiative by the Scottish Government - do you think new mums in the rUK should get the same?

From what I've seen of them they look like a great idea, especially the box that can be used for a newborn to sleep in. Probably saves a lot of money than trying to buy a small baby bed which is only used for a few weeks.

Anything that helps new parents is a good thing imo.

Didn't they do this in Denmark or one of the nordic countries too?

Yes, Finland I think. The SG have been slagged by the opposition Parties up here for "wasting money" - but the uptake is 85% and how can you waste money on new babies?

Exactly! There is no waste. New parents and their babes need all the help they can get. Do the boxes go to every knew parent regardless of personal wealth?

Yes, it's another universal benefit like Uni fees, free prescriptions, free personal care for the elderly and the new 1140 hours Early Learning and Childcare (the bane of my working life at the moment).

I used to be against universal benefits but after a few debates on Twitter and Facebook, I agree with them.

The one I hated most was the childcare one - ironically - but someone pointed out to me that it was to benefit the child rather than the aprents and now I agree with it. You can be loaded and a neglectful parent. Same goes for the baby boxes - it's for the child.

I’m not sure about using the box for a bed but the rest of it is great. We received baby gift boxes when I had my kids in the late nineties, don’t they do them anymore?

I don't know about the rest of the UK. They're a year old up here. I didn't get one but I got a thing called a "Bounty Pack" with nappies etc.

I thnk the idea behind using the box as a bed is for people who can't afford to buy a crib.

Not a fan. Anything the state pokes it nose in is usually done badly and at exorbitant cost. The state has no place doing baby showers.

As with anything in Scotland you have to view it through the indie lens. SNP only do things they think will increase push for independence. This is a bribe for poorer young mothers. The numbers of which will have been carefully anslysed prior to this policy.
